Camera Information
Free Webcam Test Online π·
This webcam test checks your camera in seconds, right in your browser. No downloads, no installs, no signup. You get a live preview, real frame rate measurement, resolution detection, lighting analysis, and a complete quality score from A to F. Whether you are getting ready for a Zoom call, a job interview, an online class, a Twitch stream, or a webinar, this tool tells you exactly how your camera will perform before you go live.
Most webcam test tools just show you a live preview and stop there. Ours measures actual frame rate (not just what your camera claims), detects lighting problems, checks image sharpness, and grades the result so you know if your camera is broadcast-ready or needs a fix.
How to Test Your Webcam
- Click “Start Test” and allow camera access when your browser asks.
- Look at the preview to confirm your camera is working.
- Check the metrics: resolution, frame rate, brightness, and lighting condition appear automatically.
- Read your quality score (A through F) for an instant verdict.
- Take a photo or record a video if you want to download a sample.
- Use the grid overlay to frame yourself perfectly using the rule of thirds.
If you have multiple cameras (built-in laptop cam, external USB webcam, phone-as-webcam apps like Continuity Camera or DroidCam), use the camera dropdown to switch between them and test each one.
What Makes This Webcam Test Different
Real Frame Rate Measurement
Most webcam tests show you the FPS your camera reports it can do. We measure the actual frame rate while you are looking at the preview. The difference matters. A webcam may claim 60 fps but only deliver 24 fps in low light or when the system is under load. Our tool catches this.
Lighting and Sharpness Analysis
Bad lighting is the number one reason video looks unprofessional. The tool analyzes the brightness and sharpness of your video in real time and tells you if the room is too dark, too bright, or just right. If your image is soft (out of focus or low quality), you will see it in the sharpness metric before your viewers do.
Quality Score
The score factors in resolution, real frame rate, lighting, and sharpness to give you a single grade. An “A” means broadcast-ready. A “C” means usable but with one fixable issue. The tool also tells you specifically what is dragging your score down so you can fix it in seconds.
Built-In Microphone Detection
The tool automatically detects whether your computer also has a microphone available, which is useful if you are testing a webcam that has a built-in mic and want to confirm it is being recognized.
Privacy Built In
Everything runs in your browser. Your video never leaves your device. No frames are uploaded, stored, or transmitted. If you take a photo or record a video, those files exist only on your computer until you choose to download them.
Common Use Cases
Webcam Test for Zoom, Teams, and Google Meet
Run a quick webcam test before any video call to make sure your camera is detected, your resolution is right, and your lighting is acceptable. Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Google Meet all have built-in camera tests but they only show a preview. Ours measures the things that actually matter: real frame rate, image sharpness, and brightness.
Webcam Test for Streaming and Twitch
Streamers care about consistent frame rate at the resolution they broadcast at. Use the resolution selector to test specifically at 1080p or 1440p and watch the real-time FPS counter. If it drops below your target during the test, it will drop during your stream too.
Webcam Test for Job Interviews
Nothing tanks an interview faster than a frozen video, dark room, or terrible angle. Run the online webcam test 10 minutes before your interview, turn on the rule-of-thirds grid to position yourself well, and verify your quality score is at least a B before you join the call.
Webcam Test for Online Classes and Recording
Whether you are attending a class, teaching one, or recording a video for a course, this test catches problems that students or viewers will notice but you might not. The mirror toggle is especially useful here so you can see yourself the way your students will see you on the call.
Webcam Not Working? Common Fixes
Browser Permission Denied
If you accidentally clicked “Block” when asked for camera permission, your browser will not show the camera even after refresh. Click the lock or camera icon in your address bar, find Camera, set it to “Allow”, then reload the page.
Camera Used by Another App
Only one app can use your webcam at a time. If Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Skype, OBS, or any video app is open and has the camera active, our webcam test tool cannot access it. Close all other video apps and refresh.
Camera Disabled in Windows 11 Privacy Settings
Go to Settings β Privacy & Security β Camera. Make sure “Camera access” is on, “Let apps access your camera” is on, and your browser is allowed in the list of apps below.
Camera Disabled in macOS Privacy Settings
Open System Settings β Privacy & Security β Camera. Find your browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox) and toggle it on.
Outdated or Missing Camera Drivers
If your camera does not show up in the dropdown, your drivers may be missing. On Windows, open Device Manager, expand “Cameras” or “Imaging devices”, right-click your webcam, and select “Update driver”. On Mac, drivers update through normal system updates.
USB Connection Issue
For external webcams, try a different USB port. USB 2.0 ports may not provide enough bandwidth for 1080p or higher. Plug into a USB 3.0 port (usually blue) directly on your computer rather than through a hub.
Physical Camera Cover or Switch
Many laptops have a physical privacy slider or shutter over the camera. Logitech, Lenovo, HP, and Dell laptops often have this. Check your laptop above the screen for a small slider and make sure it is in the open position.
Camera Disabled in BIOS
On some business laptops, the camera can be disabled at the BIOS level by IT departments. If nothing else works and you have admin access, restart and enter BIOS to check camera settings.
How to Improve Your Webcam Video Quality
Lighting Is Everything
The single biggest factor in how good you look on video is light. Face a window or a soft light source. Avoid sitting with a window or bright light behind you (it makes you a silhouette). A simple $20 ring light or panel light pointed at your face will instantly make any webcam look better.
Camera Position
The camera should be at eye level or slightly above. Looking down into a laptop camera is unflattering and unprofessional. Stack books under your laptop or use a stand. Frame yourself with your eyes about one-third from the top of the frame (use our rule-of-thirds grid).
Clean the Lens
Webcams collect dust, fingerprints, and smudges over time. Wipe the lens with a microfiber cloth before any important call. The difference is dramatic.
Use a Higher Resolution
Many video apps default to 720p even if your camera supports 1080p. In Zoom, go to Settings β Video and enable HD. For Teams, the resolution adjusts automatically based on connection. Test your camera at 1080p in our tool to confirm it works at that resolution before relying on it.
Stable Internet Connection
A great camera in a slow connection still looks bad because the video gets compressed heavily. For 1080p calls, you need at least 3 Mbps upload. Test your speed before important calls.
Background Matters
A clean, uncluttered background looks more professional. If you cannot fix your physical background, use the blur or virtual background features in your video app.
Understanding Your Test Results
What the Resolution Numbers Mean
- 4K UHD (3840Γ2160): Premium streaming and recording
- 1080p Full HD (1920Γ1080): Standard for professional video calls and streaming
- 720p HD (1280Γ720): Acceptable for most video calls
- 480p (854Γ480): Low quality, only acceptable on very slow connections
- Below 480p: Likely an old laptop camera or hardware issue
What Frame Rate Matters
- 30 fps: Standard for video calls, looks smooth
- 24 fps: Cinematic, fine for recordings, slightly choppy on calls
- 15-20 fps: Noticeable lag, often due to lighting or system load
- Below 15 fps: Camera is struggling, fix lighting or close other apps
- 60 fps: Premium streaming and gaming, requires good camera and lighting
What the Quality Score Means
- A (90-100): Broadcast-ready. High resolution, smooth frame rate, good lighting and sharpness.
- B (75-89): Good quality. Suitable for any professional video call or stream.
- C (60-74): Usable but has one issue. Tool tells you what to fix.
- D (40-59): Multiple problems. Lighting, resolution, or frame rate need attention.
- F (under 40): Camera not working or has a serious issue.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I test if my webcam has a microphone?
The Camera Information panel on this page shows whether a microphone is detected. To test the actual mic quality, use our online mic test, which gives you full audio analysis with quality scoring.
Can I use my phone as a webcam?
Yes, with apps like Continuity Camera (Mac + iPhone), DroidCam, EpocCam, or Iriun. Once your phone is set up as a webcam on your computer, it appears in the camera dropdown on this page like any other webcam. Test it with our tool to confirm quality.
Why does my real frame rate differ from what my webcam claims?
Webcams report a maximum frame rate but actual frame rate depends on lighting, system load, and resolution. In low light, most webcams drop frame rate automatically to gather more light per frame. If your real FPS is much lower than claimed, improve your lighting first.
How many megapixels is my webcam?
The tool calculates this automatically once you start the test. Resolution divided by one million equals megapixels. A 1080p camera is about 2 MP, a 1440p camera is about 3.7 MP, and a 4K camera is about 8.3 MP.
How do I record a video with my webcam?
Start the test, then click Record. The tool captures video and audio (if you allowed microphone access). When you stop recording, the playback appears below and you can download it as WebM. The file stays on your device.
Why is my webcam light on but no video shows?
Usually a permission issue. The browser has access to start the camera (so the LED turns on) but is being blocked from displaying the feed. Refresh the page, click Start Test again, and watch carefully for the permission popup. Make sure you click Allow.
Is this webcam test safe and private?
Yes. Everything happens in your browser. We never upload, store, or transmit your video. There is no signup, no account, no tracking of video content. If you take a photo or record a video, those files are created and saved on your device only.
How do I test my webcam without Skype or Zoom?
That is exactly what this page is for. You do not need Skype, Zoom, Teams, or any video app. The browser-based test is faster and gives you better information about your camera quality.
Can I test my webcam on iPhone or Android?
Yes. Open our online webcam test in Safari (iOS) or Chrome (Android), tap Start Test, and allow camera access. The test works on both front and rear cameras. Use the camera dropdown to switch between them.
Why does my webcam look blurry or low quality?
Three usual reasons. First, the lens is dirty, wipe it with a microfiber cloth. Second, the lighting is poor, face a light source. Third, the camera is operating at a low resolution, use our resolution selector to test at 1080p and confirm it works.
How do I know if my webcam is working?
Click “Start Test” on our webcam test page. If you see your video preview, your camera is working. If you do not, scroll up to the troubleshooting section. Most camera issues are browser permissions, another app using the camera, or a privacy slider on the laptop.
How do I test my webcam online for free?
Click “Start Test” on our webcam test page and allow camera access. The tool runs entirely in your browser, with no signup, no download, and no software install. Works on Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, and Android.
