How to Allow Microphone Access in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari
If a website cannot hear you, check two separate permissions: the website must be allowed to use your microphone, and your computer or phone must allow the browser to access it. Changing only one setting may leave the microphone blocked.
This guide explains browser permissions. If your microphone is missing from your device settings or fails in every application, start with our microphone troubleshooting guide instead.
First, check which website is blocked
Open the exact website where you need the microphone. Permission granted to TestMic does not automatically allow Google Meet, Discord or another website. If a permission prompt appears, choose the option that allows microphone use for that site. Only allow access on sites you trust.
After changing a permission, reload the page and start its microphone feature again. If several inputs are available, select the intended microphone by name. A laptop, webcam and headset can all provide separate inputs.
Allow microphone access in Google Chrome
- Open the website in Chrome.
- Select the site controls beside the address bar.
- Find the microphone permission and allow access. If it is not shown, open the site settings.
- Reload the website, then start the microphone test or call again.
You can also open Chrome Settings, then Privacy and security, Site settings and Microphone. Check that sites may ask to use the microphone, and review any blocked entry for the affected website. If Chrome offers a default microphone selector, choose the device you intend to use.
If a site remains blocked, remove its saved permission and visit it again so Chrome can ask. Do not reset all browser permissions when only one website is affected.
Allow microphone access in Microsoft Edge
Open the affected website, select the site information or controls beside its address, and review microphone access. Change a blocked microphone permission to Allow, then refresh the page.
Edge also provides website permissions in Settings. Search Settings for microphone if the menu wording differs in your version. Check the individual website entry rather than assuming a permission on another site applies here. On a managed work or school browser, an administrator may control this setting.
Allow microphone access in Firefox
When Firefox asks to use your microphone, select the correct device and allow access. If you previously blocked the request, select the permission indicator beside the address bar and clear the saved decision, then reload the page.
To review remembered decisions, open Settings, Privacy & Security, then the Permissions section. Open the settings beside Microphone. Remove an outdated blocked entry or adjust the permission where available. Also check whether new microphone requests are blocked globally.
Allow microphone access in Safari on Mac
With the website open, choose Safari, Settings, then Websites. Select Microphone and review the setting for that website. Safari can ask, deny or allow access. Choose the appropriate permission for the trusted site, return to it and reload.
If Safari allows the site but sound is still missing, check macOS permissions and the selected input. A website permission is separate from the system setting that controls application access.
Check Windows or macOS permission too
In Windows 11, open Settings, Privacy & security, then Microphone. Check Microphone access and the relevant application permissions. Browsers are desktop applications, so the desktop-app access setting matters; they may not have individual switches in the Microsoft Store app list. Microsoft explains these distinctions in its microphone permission instructions.
On a Mac, open System Settings, Privacy & Security, then Microphone. Allow the browser when it appears in the list. Quit and reopen it if macOS requests this. For input selection and level adjustments, see our Windows 11 microphone settings guide or use Sound, Input on macOS.
Microphone permission on Android, iPhone and iPad
On Android, check both the website permission in your browser and the browser app permission in Android Settings. For Chrome, look under its Site settings, then Microphone. In Android Settings, open Apps, choose the browser and review its microphone permission. Menu names vary between manufacturers.
On iPhone or iPad, allow the website request when it appears. Review that website’s microphone permission through the browser’s page controls if it was denied. Also inspect relevant browser or app permissions in iOS Settings. Not every browser presents the same options, and a system permission switch may appear only after access has been requested.
Permission says Allow, but the microphone still does not work
Check the physical mute switch and select the correct input. Close another recording application temporarily, reconnect an external microphone and try again. A school or employer policy can override your choice; ask the administrator rather than disabling security controls.
Use our online microphone test to make a short recording after the change. If it records your voice, browser capture works for that site at that moment. Return to the original website and repeat its own test: each website has its own permission and device selection.
Does allowing access mean a website can always listen?
Allowing permission enables microphone access within the browser’s security rules; it does not mean every website gains access. Permission duration varies by browser and the choice you make. Review the browser’s microphone indicator while recording and revoke access when you no longer need it. If you also need video, follow our separate camera permission guide.
