Fortnite Voice Chat Not Working? Check Channels and Mic Settings
If Fortnite voice chat is not working, check the active voice channel and input method before changing the microphone driver. You can have a working headset while speaking in the wrong channel or waiting for a push-to-talk key.
Choose the right voice channel
Inspect the Social menu and the available voice controls. Party Channel connects your Epic party; Game Channel serves the relevant in-game team arrangement. Make sure you and the people you expect to hear are using the same appropriate channel.
On a console, an Xbox or PlayStation party chat can be separate from Fortnite voice. Switch using the platform’s supported controls if you intend to use in-game chat. Check that voice has not been moved to another signed-in device.
Check push-to-talk and mute
If Push to Talk is enabled, confirm its assigned key or button and hold it while testing. If you prefer an open microphone and the setting is available, select it deliberately rather than assuming it is active.
Check the headset’s physical mute switch, controller mute and Fortnite voice controls. Hearing game sound through a headset does not prove its microphone is selected.
Review communication restrictions
Account, parental and platform communication settings may restrict voice. A cabined account or an incomplete consent process can limit communication. Use the account’s official process with a parent or guardian where required; do not try to bypass it.
Epic’s Fortnite voice-chat troubleshooting guide explains channel, account and platform-specific checks. These requirements can change, so consult it when an option is missing.
Test the microphone on the device running the game
On PC, record a short sample using our microphone test. Select the same headset or microphone you intend to use in Fortnite. If it fails there too, use the general microphone troubleshooting guide.
A browser test on a laptop cannot verify the audio route on a separate console. Use the console’s own supported microphone check for that setup.
Check PC input and permission
In Windows 11, review Settings, System, Sound and select the correct input. Inspect Fortnite’s input and output device choices where available. Also check Windows microphone privacy controls, including the applicable desktop-app access.
If Windows receives your voice but Fortnite does not, focus on the game’s audio settings and account controls. Our Windows microphone settings guide helps establish a working system input without changing unrelated devices.
You can speak, but cannot hear teammates
Check voice-chat volume and the selected output, not just microphone gain. Ask a teammate whether your voice reaches them. Input and output problems can occur independently.
If several players lose voice at once, check Epic service information before changing the local network. Avoid broad router or firewall changes without a diagnosed need and platform-specific guidance.
Confirm the fix in the intended channel
Test a short conversation with a willing teammate, using the same device and controls you will use during a game. If voice works but typing or fan noise is distracting, use the microphone quality guide after the connection is stable.
