Discord Mic Not Working? Fix Input, Permissions and Voice Settings

If your Discord microphone is not working, first check whether Discord receives your voice at all. A microphone that works in a browser but stays silent in Discord usually needs a different fix from a device that fails everywhere.

Open User Settings and look for Voice & Video. Choose your microphone explicitly under the input device setting, check its input level and try the available microphone test. Control names can differ between desktop, browser and mobile versions.

Compare Discord with a separate recording

Make a short recording with our online mic test, using the same device you selected in Discord. Listen to the playback rather than relying only on a moving meter.

  • Clear recording outside Discord: focus on Discord settings, permissions and the channel.
  • No sound anywhere: follow the microphone not working checklist before changing voice effects.
  • Voice is present but quiet or distorted: the capture path works; investigate level and processing rather than treating it as a missing device.

Select the correct input instead of Default

A webcam, monitor, controller or Bluetooth headset may become the default input after you connect it. Choose your microphone by its device name in Discord. Speak normally and watch the response. For an audio interface, the listed device may be the interface rather than the microphone model.

Check the physical mute switch, inline headset control and Discord mute button. A server mute or channel permission can prevent other people from hearing you even when your local input test works. Ask a moderator about a server restriction rather than reinstalling your microphone.

Check push-to-talk and voice activation

If Push to Talk is selected, Discord transmits while the assigned key is held. Confirm that a key is assigned and test it while Discord has focus. If it works there but fails in one game, investigate that game and shortcut interaction before changing system-wide permissions.

For Voice Activity, check whether quiet speech opens the input gate. If your version offers automatic sensitivity or a manual threshold, compare both approaches. A threshold that is too strict can remove the beginning of words or prevent your voice from transmitting.

When the mic test works but people cannot hear you

A successful test confirms local capture, not successful transmission to every channel. Join a permitted voice channel with a willing friend, confirm that you are unmuted and check whether your speaking indicator appears. Ask whether the problem affects only one server or every call.

If everyone sounds broken up or the connection repeatedly reconnects, check connection status and compare another network when practical. If only your voice fails, keep investigating your input path. Do not buy a replacement microphone based on a single failed call.

Check microphone permission for the version you use

The Discord website and desktop app have separate access paths. In a browser, allow microphone access for Discord itself; allowing TestMic does not grant Discord permission. Use our browser microphone permission guide if the request was blocked.

On Windows 11, review Settings, Privacy & security, Microphone, including desktop-app access. On macOS, check System Settings, Privacy & Security, Microphone and reopen Discord after a requested permission change. On a phone, review the Discord app permission and any available system microphone privacy control.

Compare processing before resetting everything

Noise suppression, automatic level adjustment and sensitivity settings can change quiet speech. Temporarily change one available processing option, repeat the same sentence and keep the change only if it helps. Do not disable every option at once: that hides which setting caused the problem.

For menu-specific help, Discord maintains an official voice and video troubleshooting guide. A voice-settings reset should come after you note your current input and shortcuts, because you may need to select them again.

Confirm the fix in a real conversation

Test a normal sentence, a quieter sentence and a sentence while your game is running. Ask the other person whether any words disappear. If the recording is consistently too soft in other apps as well, use our Windows microphone level settings before increasing Discord gain further.
