Google Meet Microphone Not Working? Fix No Sound and Blocked Access

If your Google Meet microphone is not working, check whether Meet has permission to use it and whether the correct input is selected. These are separate settings: a website can have permission while listening to the wrong microphone.

Start with the Meet microphone selector

On the pre-join screen, open the available audio settings and choose your intended microphone. During a meeting, use the audio settings associated with the microphone control. Speak and check the input indicator if your version displays one.

Check the physical mute switch and the meeting mute button. If you cannot unmute, look for an organizer or account restriction. A host restriction is not fixed by reinstalling a sound driver.

Allow microphone access for Meet itself

Open Meet in your browser, select the site controls beside the address and review Microphone. Allow access for the trusted Meet site, then reload it. If you previously denied permission, clear or change that saved decision so the browser can request access again.

Permission for another website does not apply to Meet. Our browser microphone access guide covers Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari, including the system permission layer.

Check whether the microphone works outside the meeting

Use our online mic test to record the same input. Listen to the sample. If your voice is clear there but missing from Meet, focus on Meet selection, permission and meeting controls. If every recording is silent, use the general microphone troubleshooting guide to investigate the device and connection.

A browser test confirms one working capture path at that moment. It cannot prove how Meet processes or transmits the sound.

Windows and Mac permission can override the browser

In Windows 11, open Settings, Privacy & security, Microphone. Review microphone access and desktop-app access for the browser. In macOS, open System Settings, Privacy & Security, Microphone and allow the browser you use for Meet. Reopen it if the system requests this.

If the browser says access is allowed but the microphone still fails, inspect both layers before repeatedly granting the same website permission. On managed computers, contact the administrator if the setting is locked.

Meet hears you, but other people cannot

Verify that the current tab is the meeting you intend to join and that its microphone is unmuted. If you have several Meet tabs open, close an unused call after leaving it properly. Ask one participant whether they hear you and whether other people are affected.

When a local recording is clean but your transmitted voice breaks up, compare another supported browser or an approved alternative network if available. Call connection problems can affect audio without appearing in a local recording. Avoid changing several microphone settings while diagnosing a connection fault.

Fix quiet speech or words that cut off

Move the microphone to a practical speaking position and compare one noise-processing option at a time where Meet offers it. A headset boom pointed away from your mouth or aggressive suppression can make speech hard to hear. If the recording is quiet outside Meet too, adjust the device level first.

For a repeatable final check, follow our pre-meeting microphone checklist: record a sentence, listen to it and confirm the same input inside the call.

What if Meet cannot find any microphone?

Check whether the device appears in the operating system. Reconnect a USB microphone directly to the computer and check its mute control. Reopen Meet after connecting it. If it remains absent everywhere, this is a device-detection problem rather than a Meet-only permission problem.
