Zoom Microphone Not Working? Fix Input and Meeting Audio
If your Zoom microphone is not working, confirm that you joined the meeting audio and selected the right microphone. Being able to see the meeting does not necessarily mean your microphone is connected to its audio.
Check how you joined audio
Use the meeting audio control to join with computer audio when you intend to speak through the computer microphone. If you joined by telephone, confirm which device is handling sound. Avoid leaving two nearby devices joined with active microphones and speakers.
Check Zoom mute, your headset mute switch and any interface mute control. A host restriction can prevent unmuting; ask the host if the control is unavailable.
Select the microphone inside Zoom
Open Zoom audio settings or the microphone selector in the meeting controls. Select the intended input by name. Do not assume Default points to the same device after connecting a webcam, dock or Bluetooth headset.
Use the microphone test and playback feature available in your Zoom client. Speak a complete sentence at a normal distance. A responding indicator confirms some signal, but playback helps reveal whether it is your voice, background noise or the wrong input.
Compare a recording outside Zoom
Record the same sentence with our online microphone test, selecting the same device. If it sounds clear, focus on Zoom selection, access and audio processing. If the microphone is silent everywhere, follow the general microphone troubleshooting guide.
If playback is silent, play a known audio file too. An incorrect speaker or headphone output can make a working microphone test appear broken.
Check permission for your app or browser
On Windows 11, review Settings, Privacy & security, Microphone, including access for desktop applications. On a Mac, check System Settings, Privacy & Security, Microphone for Zoom or the browser you use. Reopen the app if requested.
The web version also needs website permission. Follow our browser microphone access instructions if you denied a prompt. A permission granted to TestMic does not grant the Zoom website the same access.
Your voice is too quiet or cuts out
Compare the available automatic volume and noise-suppression controls one at a time. Test quiet words as well as normal speech. Strong suppression or unsuitable gain can remove parts of a sentence without making the microphone completely silent.
If every recording is quiet, adjust the device itself using our Windows microphone settings guide. If only Zoom is quiet, investigate Zoom before raising system gain further.
The test works, but the live meeting does not
Ask one participant to confirm whether they hear you. Check that the correct meeting window is active, you are unmuted there and the selected audio method has not changed. Note whether the issue affects only one meeting or every Zoom call.
If local playback is clean but the transmitted voice repeatedly breaks up, investigate the connection and app load. A browser recording cannot measure end-to-end meeting reliability.
Run one final meeting check
Repeat a short conversation with the same headset, room and connection you plan to use. For a repeatable preparation routine, use our pre-meeting microphone checklist. Check the camera separately with our Zoom camera guide if video is also required.
